- Abstract
The author comments on the decision of the U.S. to oppose the Third United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS III), which was adopted on April 30, 1982. He assumes that the new oceans policy of the administration of U.S. President Ronald Reagan will renounce the deep seabed mining provisions of the Convention. He offers his views on the principle of the freedom of the high seas. He notes that some provisions of the Convention reflect customary international law while others do not.
