The article focuses on the problem of poverty in the U.S. It mentions the efforts of many people such as child labor reformers and labor leaders and various reform movements in fighting poverty, and the history of urban and rural housing and renewal efforts in the country. It discusses the involvement of private and public charitable institutions in welfare activities, the involvement of government in slums and housing, and the efforts of President Lyndon Baines Johnson to design housing and city development programs in an effort to make progress against poverty.
