- Abstract
The article discusses the implications of research funds for academic freedom in the U.S. The freedom of the individual faculty members and of universities has been made more meaningful with the rapid increase in the availability of outside funds for research. The effects of limitations on the freedom of individuals accompanying the acceptance of earmarked research funds are assessed. The nature of freedom in science and society is explained. Restriction of individuals' freedom by rules of conduct and rules regulating the expenditure of money is discussed.
