- Abstract
The play Galán, tramposo y pobre by Jerónimo de Salas Barbadillo is structured as a comedia de enredo in order to parody the values of family and nobility that are usually predominate in the genre. Through the figure of the main character, a nobody who pretends to be a nobleman, we discover the hypocrisy of the relationships among relatives of the high nobility. Behind a facade of loyalty, hide dark desires and yearnings of enrichment. The play, I argue, brings out the deterioration of the rural extended family in a nascent urban and capitalist society, in which individualism triumphs over the search for a common good and the maintenance of the integrity of families.
