- Title
EFFECTS OF NEWS DEVIANCE AND PERSONAL INVOLVEMENT ON AUDIENCE STORY SELECTION: A WEB-TRACKING ANALYSIS.
- Authors
Jong Hyuk Lee
- Abstract
This article examines the concept of deviance regarding the selection of news stories by consumers. Some experts, such as Pamela Shoemaker, postulate that deviance, along with social significance, are the two most influential factors in attracting viewers to a news item. Deviance is divided into three classifications: statistical deviance, social change deviance, and normative deviance. The author conducts empirical research that validates the emphasis on deviance by journalists and social scientists. Although, he cautions that his work has limitations.
