- Title
The Religiosity of a Former Confucian-Buddhist: The Catholic Faith of Yang Tingyun.
- Authors
Yu Liu
- Abstract
The article discusses the religious beliefs of Yang Tingyun, a Chinese convert to Catholicism who had previously been involved with Confucianism and Buddhism. According to the author, scholarly depictions of Yang's religious experience as linear and unidirectional oversimplify his complex relationships to belief and obscure his tendency to reject some tenets of his various faiths while accepting others. Details related to Yang's conversion to Christianity and to his Neo-Confucian background are presented. Other topics include polygamy and Jesuit missionary activity in China.
