An essay is presented that describes teaching the course "Detroit: The Modern City in Historical Context" to freshman art and design students at the College for Creative Studies during fall 2008. It comments on the demographics of the students. The author notes that the course began with frameworks for studying American urbanization and used the memoir "Made in Detroit," by Paul Clemens, focusing on its treatment of race.
