- Abstract
Theresa Neumaier's book, "Conversation in World Englishes: Turn-Taking and Cultural Variation in Southeast Asian and Caribbean English," applies the method of Conversation Analysis (CA) to analyze verbal interactions in Southeast Asian and Caribbean English. The study compares these regional Englishes with Inner Circle Englishes to determine if patterns of interaction are variety-specific and related to cultural context or if they follow more universal structural organizations. Neumaier's analysis focuses on the organization of turns in conversations and identifies strategies used by speakers to claim or hold a turn at talk. The book provides a valuable introduction to CA in the context of World Englishes and offers insights into the potential of the CA method for future research.
