Social attitudes towards marine resource management in two Fijian villages.
- Authors

- Abstract
The article presents a study which investigated the success initiatives focusing on the link between community dependence on marine resources for primary income generation and coastal marine management in Fiji. It examined the economic health of the Ucunivanua and Namatakula villages on the island of Viti Levu in relation to their dependence on their fisheries and their ability to acknowledge areas that require attention, such as coastal management and nutrient reduction in Namatakula. Assessing the community's perception of control over their fishing grounds is important, especially for the Fijian sector of the population due to their ownership of most of the marine resources and the cultural and economical importance of these resources to the people.
