- Abstract
The article looks at corporate communication strategies in crisis situations, as of 2013, citing examples including product recalls and alleged fraud in financial reporting. It notes that a financial executive may be the most appropriate person to carry out public communication in such situations. It offers advice in the form of eight statements about crisis communication. It says the news media tend to quickly labels certain parties as the victims or the bad guys and will generally side with the former in any coverage. It discusses factors that should guide the selection of a corporate spokesperson. Social media, receptionists, and attorneys are also discussed.
