- Authors
Klein, Andrea S.
- Abstract
This article reports on the need for corporations and their treasury teams of monitor counterparty risk associated with the global ecosystem of suppliers. It notes that systemic weaknesses in the monitoring of supplier counterparty risk were highligthed by the global financial crisis. It cites BMW Group, Volkswagen Group, Nissan Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp. as some of the auto manufacturers that struggled to assess the risk to their businesses from exposed suppliers. It contends that additional financing can mask inherent problems with a participant or group of participants exacerbating the overall risk to everyone. It points out the need for treasurers and banking institutions to work as a team to effectively manage the counterparty risk ecosystem.
