- Abstract
This article examines prospects for U.S. firms seeking to grow through acquisition amid an uncertain economic condition. It points out the need for firms to assess its appetite and readiness for acquisition. Various sources of funding facing these firms are internal liquidity, partnership, and liquidity from debt or equity. According to Darrell Rigby, author of "Winning in Turbulence," acquisitions completed during and immediately following the 2001-02 downturn led to almost triple the excess returns of those made during the preceding boom. There has been a 93% increase in U.S. middle-market mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity in March 2010, Robert W. Baird & Co. notes. Also included are information on important factors to consider in screening acquisition targets.
