Same text, different readings: Shakespeare's Sonnet 94.
- Authors
Easthope, Anthony
- Abstract
The article discusses ways in which William Shakespeare's 94th sonnet exemplifies a typical difficulty for conventional literary criticism. Topics addressed include a conventional view that meaning is fixed in language by the author in order to show it will not work and an argument against the counter-assumption that a play, novel or poem means only what the reader wants it to.
