- Abstract
In 1683, the students of Leipzig University performed a serenade in honour of the victory over the Turkish army before Vienna. The music is lost but the libretto and contemporary descriptions of the performance allow a reconstruction of some of the details of the piece. The libretto was written by Paul Thymich, a teacher at the Thomasschule and the first librettist at the Leipzig opera; the music was composed by Johann Kuhnau. The piece belongs to a larger group of works composed during the 1680s that explore the possibilities of dramatic music, including an opera, an oratorio and a cycle of sacred cantatas. The leading figure was in most cases Paul Thymich, who set out to establish an operatic style in Leipzig.
