- Abstract
A letter to the editor of the Journal of Gastroenterology raises concerns about a study comparing oral sulfate tablets (OST) to polyethylene glycol/ascorbate (PEG-Asc) for bowel preparation in older patients. The authors argue that the dietary compliance and tolerance of elderly patients should be carefully considered, as a 1-day low-residue diet (LRD) may be as effective as a 3-day LRD. They also suggest that excellent bowel preparation may not necessarily be better than good, as excessively clean bowels can decrease polyp and adenoma detection rates. Additionally, the authors question the impact of screening/surveillance indications on the detection rates of adenomas and polyps in the elderly population. While they appreciate the implications of the study, they call for more detailed research to optimize bowel preparation regimens for older patients.
