TOURISM: Mali/West Africa.
Abstract
The article reports that Ansar Dine, a radical Islamic faction, continues to destroy the 500-year-old heritage of the city of Timbuktu in Mali despite international condemnation. The group secured its hold in northern Mali and destroyed the tombs the city's Sufi saints, claiming that they were idolatrous. The United Nations (UN) cultural agency has called for an immediate stoppage to the destruction of the sacred tombs.
