WORKING WITH BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS.
- Authors

- Abstract
The article discusses the role of bacteria and fungi in creating alternatives to chemical pesticides. The first bacterial insecticide was based on the bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis. Bacteria and fungi act to control insects and plant diseases through plant-microbe interactions. Gary Harmon of BioWorks Inc. has worked with strains of soil fungus Trichoderma harzianum. BioWorks now markets products which contain T. harzianum spores. Meanwhile, Mycotech Corp. developed a strain of the fungus Beauveria bassiana as a bio-insecticide for whiteflies and aphids.
