- Abstract
In 2017, an exhibition of archbishop's portraits, commissioned by archbishop Juraj Császka from his court painter Félix Daberto, took place in the Municipal Museum in Zombor. The aim of the study is to bring the life and work of this painter closer and to explain the circumstances of the origin of the portraits. The study can also serve as an introduction to the issue of patronage of church leaders in the field of art and portraiture in the 19th century. Daberto was born in South Tyrol and began his career as an ordinary room painter. Later, as a restorer of frescoes, he participated in the renovation of the interior of the Church of Saint Martin in Pressburg, but a breakthrough in his career occurred after meeting with Archbishop Császko. He considered it important to preserve the architectural and material heritage of Spiš and invited well-known artists, restorers, including Dabertoo, to participate in this vision. Successful cooperation also continued in Kalocsa, where Daberto became a true court painter of the Archbishop. The study maps this part of the life of the painter who, in addition to church paintings, also dealt with altar paintings, portraits of secular and ecclesiastical people, participated in the decoration or reconstruction of many secular buildings in the south of the Hungary Empire. After the death of Archbishop Császka in 1904, the old and sick Daberto also retires and all the information about his life is lost, and the place and time of his death are unknown.
