- Title
SQUARING THE CIRCLE: THE MULTIPLE PURPOSES OF CIVIL SOCIETY IN TOCQUEVILLE'S DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA.
- Authors
Neem, Johann N.
- Abstract
The article analyzes how Alexis de Tocqueville views the multiple purposes of civil society in his book Democracy in America. According to Tocqueville, U.S. citizens form associations to pursue common objectives. He argued that associating teaches citizens how to cooperate. Associating defends liberty from the dual threats of despotism and atomistic individualism. Tocqueville regarded the science of association to be the fundamental science in a democracy.
