Monastic Masturbation in Pali Buddhist Texts.
- Authors
Derrett, J. Duncan M.
- Abstract
This article focuses on monastic masturbation described in the Pali Buddhist texts. Vinaya which is the Buddhist monastic law contains disciplinary materials related to masturbation. Isabel Blew Horner would have been the most capable person to translate Vinaya into English, but she turned in down and wrote her own version of the Pali Vinaya. Semen is considered impure according to Indian superstition. Therefore, the masturbator had to use the lavatory and inauspicious left hand instead of the right hand which is generally used for giving and receiving gifts. Later he had to confess in front of a disciplinary committee consisting of fellow monks, following which they sentenced him to return to postordination status and to other penances.
