- Abstract
The article discusses a research study on the diet of European seahorses including the Hippocampus guttulatus and Hippocampus hippocampus in the Aegean Sea near the coasts of Turkey. Analyzed were 47 fish stomachs, 25 from H. hippocampus and 22 from H. guttulatus for determining their diets according to prey fish sex and size. Results showed 35 prey items from 9 prey groups in the stomach of H. hippocampus while 16 prey items from 13 prey groups were identified on the stomachs of H. guttulatus. Also noted is the relative importance index of decapod crustacean larvae at 23.21% and unidentified preys at 30.01% while there were no prey sexual diferences seen in the diet of the two seahorse species.
