- Abstract
The article discusses the book "Reclaiming Democratic Education: Student and Teacher Activism and the Future of Education Policy" by Christopher D. Thomas. The book explores the student protests and teacher strikes that occurred in the United States in 2018, following the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The author argues that these protests and strikes were significant because they took place during a time when education policy in the US has been dominated by neoliberal, neoconservative, and religious authoritarian ideologies. Thomas proposes a new policy model that prioritizes preparation for citizenship in public education. The book provides a historical context for student and teacher civic activism and offers policy recommendations to shift away from the current education model.
