- Abstract
A literary criticism of the novella "Kotlovan" (The Foundation Pit) by Soviet author Andrei Platonov is presented. It examines interpretations of the common house for the proletariat, the novella's main figure. It states that the common proletarian house is a construction project that echoes issues of 1920s and 1930s including the construction boom of the First Five-Year Plan and socialism. It discusses a possible literary source of the figure by surveying the historical context of the novella.
