- Abstract
This paper discusses the importance of Brazilian participation in United Nations peacekeeping missions, in order to achieve the objectives of national foreign policy, guided by multilateralism. Therefore, initially addresses multilateralism as a principle of action adopted by Brazil in international forums as opposed to unilateralism of the great powers. Multilateralism, "multilateralism of reciprocity" and its relations with the international security field are defined and correlated. Subsequently the concepts and definitions of United Nations peacekeeping missions are presented. Following, the analysis of the Brazilian participation in Haiti, relating the key concepts seen above to a practical case. Finally, we conclude on the importance of Brazilian participation in this type of operation, in view of the objectives of Brazilian foreign policy.
