- Title
THE CONVICT REBELLION OF 1804.
- Authors
CONNELL, R. W.
- Abstract
A detailed account of the convict rebellion of 1804, in which the author examines the place of the rebellion in Australian history. The rebellion has received less careful attention from historians than is its due. It was not a simultaneous mass outburst against the rigors of the convict system or of the Protestant ascendancy, but seems to have been inspired by men driven by a determination to get back to their homes or to die in the attempt. The rebellion presented a frontal challenge to the major principle on which colonial society was constructed, that of authority. Consequently in the next few years the governor was seen more than ever as the upholder of the existing structure of authority.
