- Abstract
The article focuses on the book "A Papuan Plutocracy: Ranked Exchange on Rossel Island," by John Liep, which is the first full-scale modern ethnography of the shell money system on Rossel Island in Papua New Guinea. It provides an overview of the ranked exchange of shell decorations in Rossel Island. According to Liep, the bulk of his book is concerned with explaining Rossel Island society and the complex ranked exchange system that pervades the social life of its people. He notes that the book presents the colonial history of the island.
