- Abstract
Introduction: Fungal infection of sexual organs occurs ma high percentage of females. The study included women in the Pomorsko-Drawski Region, where such research has never been performed before. The aim of the study: To determine the prevalence of fungi isolated from female sexual organs - their phenotypic features, and convergence of fungal occurrence with diagnosis and particular clinical manifestations of mycosis. Material and methods: A total of 622 women were examined including 86 pregnant, 91 with oral contraceptive (OC),30 with hormonal replacement therapy (HRT), 13 with intrauterine device (IUD). 170 axenic strains were isolated from the material taken from the back of the vaginal vault. Morphological features of the colonies and microcultures were evaluated. Biochemical features were determined with own methods and tests (bioMérieux: API 20 C, API 20 C AUX, API ZYM). Results: 10 fungal species were identified (C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. parapsilosis, S. cerevisiae, C. tropicalis, C. guilIiermondii, C. humicola, C. kefir, C. lipolytica, T. cutaneum). The prevalence of fungi was 27.3±3.41%. The convergence of fungal prevalence and clinical diagnosis of mycosis was Q=+0.738. For each of 7 signs Q ranged between +0.574 and +0.853. Conclusions: All fungal phenotypic features were useful in diagnosing Candida species and digital coding of strains within species. Among extra-cellular hydrolases, the highest activity was observed in acid phosphatase and leucine arylamidase.
