- Abstract
Overuse elbow syndrome is a set of chronic damage incurred in sport and recreation, or in some occupations as a result of long-term overuse. It occurs on the outside of the elbow (tennis elbow) and on the inner side of the elbow (golfer's elbow). The main symptom is pain in the lateral or medial epicondyle. Often enough attention is not given to the first symptoms which leads to delay in diagnosis and thus the approach to treatment. However, based on a thorough history and physical examination, along with specific clinical tests, the detection is possible. Proper and early detection of disease is important for treatment that is basically conservative. Surgical treatment is rarely used. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the impact of early detection of overuse elbow injuries to treatment, duration of treatment and complete return of patients to daily work and sport activities. Our study included 60 patients of both sexes, aged 20-50 years with a painful syndrome in the elbow, divided into two groups. The first group - injuries related to professional or sports activity and were treated in the primary health care center after more than 48 hours after symptoms occurred, and second group - athletes treated by a doctor of sports medicine or club doctors within 48 hours of symptom onset, and covered the period of two years . The results showed that the analysis of the duration of physical treatment, complete treatment duration and the length of inability to work and perform sports activities shows that all three parameters were statistically significantly longer in patients in group I compared to group II (p<0.05), indicating shorter treatment and a better outcome in patients who earlier reported to the treatment (within 48 hours). We conclude that early detection of overuse elbow injuries shortens the duration of treatment, and enables faster and more complete return of patients to their professional, sports and everyday activities.
