- Abstract
This article focuses upon the names of streets within the city of Grodno (Belarus)--specifically, the author focuses upon the similarities and differences in the names of those streets that arose between 1937 and 1993, when the city underwent the change from pre-World War II Polish to contemporary Russian street names. The author's analysis reveals that many of the the city's street names reflected the geography and/or lay of the land (e.g., used the names of nearby towns, villages, or rivers, or derived from objects located along that street). The author finds that street names which had their roots/genesis in the name of a particular church or monastery, however, underwent change since 1937.
