- Abstract
The essay seeks to demonstrate, through a revisitation of some important features of the Macedonian question, that the article III of the Mürzsteg Reform Plan carried, in accordance to his application, the premises for his success and even for his failure. The disastrous effects of his wrong execution were matter of aglow diplomatic discussions between the Austro-Hungarian Foreign Office and the Governments of Serbia, Bulgaria and Greece, and the issue appears often barely deepened in the historiography focused on the Macedonian Struggle. The aforementioned troubles not only drived towards new ideas of autonomy, sustained by British and Russian diplomacy – the latter having formerly conceived with Vienna the same Mürzsteg Plan in 1903 – for the Macedonian vilayets, but also encouraged the rising Young Turk movement to take power in 1908, leaving unsolved the old problems of ethnic and confessional rivalries in Macedonia, and leading to the Balkan wars of 1912-1913.
