- Abstract
This paper analyses the work of some Spanish researchers and innovators on wireless telephony in early twentieth-century Spain. Matías Balsera and Antonio Castilla tested radiotelephone stations in long-distance communication when looking for potential commercialization of inventions. Antonio Castilla promoted the creation of the Iberian Telecommunication Company, successfully devoted to the manufacture and marketing of radio electronics: the Spanish mail steamer Rey Jaime I was the first merchant ship in the world to install a radiotelephone station on board (1918); the first public wireless telephone service in the world was established between Barcelona and Mahon; the triode lamp was introduced in Spain. Despite strong rivalry with both the Spanish Transatlantic Company and the Wireless Telegraph and Signal Company, in 1920 he succeeded in communicating Valencia to steamer Rey Jaime I in high seas.
