- Abstract
An essay is presented that discusses the history and identity of Balkan and Ottoman Jews in the U.S. from 1893 to 1924. Topics include the identification of Ottoman Jews as Turkinos in the New York City Judeo-Spanish press, the relations of Ottoman Jews to Ashkenazim Jews in the U.S., and the creation of societies for Jews from various Ottoman areas, especially Salonica. Attempts by Ottoman Jews to identify as Sephardic Jews are noted.
