- Abstract
The article focuses on the interest expressed by 18th century French scholars in, and variations on, the Vitruvian account of the origins of building supplied at the beginning of Book 2 of the multi-volume treatise "De architectura." Topics discussed include the book's exploration of the origins and early history of civilization and attempts at explaining the differences on how nations utilize building materials. The application of the Vitruvian model in French architecture is then mentioned.
