- Abstract
The article reports that the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare (MHLW) of Japan has developed and implemented a prospective payment system (PPS) similar in concept to the diagnosis-related-group (DRG) system in the U.S. Medicare system. The Japanese system, called the Diagnosis Procedure Combination (DPC) system, is applied only to cases that are considered to require routine general inpatient care; more complicated, higher-cost cases are excluded. Reimbursement is determined by a set number of points per day for each category, length of stay, and a rating for each hospital.
