- Authors
Joyner, Christopher
- Abstract
The article discusses the increasing maritime terrorism in the waters off the Horn of Africa, operated by pirates from Somalia. According to the piracy report by the Piracy Reporting Centre in the International Chamber of Commerce's International Maritime Bureau, a total of forty-two piratical incidents occurred off the coast of Somalia in 2008. It notes several factors contributing the escalation of piracy attacks including increased trade and globalization which caused significant growth in maritime commercial traffic. It mentions the inclusion of a definition of piracy in the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (LOS) Convention which provides essential step towards countering the crime.
