- Abstract
Presents literary criticism of the book "Cape Cod" by Henry David Thoreau. The author focuses on political and social commentary in the book including the critique of charity and support of individualism. He suggests that Thoreau's political views are based on the philosophy of Cynicism and the Greek figure Cynic Diogenes of Sinope. Other topics include social injustice, philosopher Michel Foucault's idea of the self, shipwrecks, and shipping insurance fraud in the 19th century.
