- Abstract
Out of Peter Hacks' dramatic output, 11 plays and one opera libretto (clearly more than in a number of other European countries, e.g. Poland) were performed in Czech theatres. The choice of plays - beginning with the children's play Anabella and the Moon (1960) - represents all major periods of Hacks' playwriting. It is important to note there were no performances during the central phase of the 'Golden Sixties', 1964-1968 (Holý 2011); most stagings took place in the years of 'normalcy', between 1971 and 1983, partly promoted by officially organized cultural events, first of all the Days of the Theatre of the German Democratic Republic (1978). The success of the stage projects varied between succès d'estime and true theatrical highlights. Regardless of performances in many towns throughout Bohemia and Moravia, these forty years of theatre history are almost invisible in Czech publications (handbooks, monographs on the history of leading theatres in different places); Hacks' name is missing in a number of relevant indexes of names. It ought to be remembered Hacks not only approved of the Berlin Wall; he detested the 'Prague Spring' and considered the invasion of Prague in August 1968 quite in order. Founded on ample source material (theatre programs, reviews, interviews, texts by Hacks and Czech translations), this article endeavours to reconstruct the history of Hacks' plays in Bohemia and Moravia. A specific case are performances of the internationally most successful dramatic monologue Ein Gespräch im Hause Stein über den abwesenden Herrn von Goethe between 1978 and 1999.
