The article discusses the abolishment of Hanswurst character from Viennese Volkstheater by some of the theater experts. The reasons behind it were some aspects of the character which were perceived to be in conflict with the basic elements of Volkstheater. It was the radically different in its approach to the problem of human values and social system due to its origin from Italian theater form Commedia Dell'arte which developed in the 18th century. The manifestations of Hanswurst theater in the form of specific characters like Staberl, Titus and Annina represent the evolution of this genre.
