The article reports that modern back-of-book index is so ubiquitous these days that it is hard to imagine a time without it, and yet it is a relatively new invention, coming some three thousand years after the invention of the alphabet. Topics include considered that indexes are connected not only with the physical history of the book, but also with the evolving worldview and ongoing conversation of the mind that is the basis of scholarship.
