- Abstract
Shops selling hand-painted copies of famous artworks are familiar in Vietnam. The impressionists and post-impressionists are particularly ubiquitous; especially the works of van Gogh. The copyists work from monographs, with no attempt to deceive. At around US$10 each, there is no claim to significant commercial or artistic value. Vietnam was a French colony. Now the heroes of French 19th century and 20th century painting are endlessly replicated in the classical techniques of oil painting. This is an inversion of Walter Benjamin's theory of mechanical reproduction: here the hand-done artefact reproduces the textbook's machine-printed image. Cheap labour rates in Vietnam make this an economic option. This is van Gogh as pure capitalism. The daily performing of `Vincent van Gogh' is facilitated by the rapid growth of tourism in Vietnam. This paper addresses the post-colonial ironic plundering of the centre for significant touristic engagement.
