- Abstract
The article discusses adverse complications related to oral and perioral piercing. The author details the history of oral piercing, which exists in many cultures as a rite of passage and is considered a fashion expression in contemporary society. Oral health care providers are very likely to encounter patients with some form of piercing. The occurrence and severity of these complications depends on the site of piercing, procedural factors like sterility and operator experience, and the underlying health of the patient.
