- Abstract
Regional foods are important for the culture and food and nutritional security of the population, however, there are no studies that describe the availability of these foods in Brazil. It is therefore proposed to describe the household availability of regional food in 2017-2018 and its evolution in the period from 2002 to 2018. Data from the 2002-2003, 2008-2009 and 2017-2018 Household Budget Surveys on food purchases for household consumption were used. These foods were identified based on the second edition of the book Brazilian Regional Foods, taking into account the groups of fruits; vegetables and legumes; legumes; tubers, roots and cereals; and flours. The quantity of each food item purchased was converted into energy and expressed as a calorie percentage. Linear regression was used to evaluate the temporal variations of the estimates considering a P value of <0.05. Regional foods accounted for 3.69% of total energy in 2002-2003, 3.12% in 2008-2009, and 3.12% in 2017-2018. The regional food group with the highest caloric share in all years was legumes, and the Northeast is the region where the total of these foods has the highest share in all years studied. Although the trend is not uniform, the participation of regional foods fell mainly by the decline in consumption of tubers, roots and cereals, and regional legumes, but stagnated between 2008 and 2018 by the increase in consumption of regional fruits and flours. The caloric participation of regional foods in the diet is low, so these results reinforce the importance of actions to value and promote the consumption of regional foods.
