- Abstract
Background: Emotional experience of impaired health and motor complications determine the quality of life of patients with Parkinson's disease. Objective: To map the indicators of the motor and psychological burden of Parkinson's disease in the context of gender, age and disease duration. Sample and methods: Cross-sectional questionnaire survey. The sample included 153 respondents associated in regional clubs of the Parkinson Society Slovakia. A generic quality of life questionnaire PDQ 39 was used. Results: Mobility scores were not related to gender (p = 0.3716). Emotional well-being score is significantly better in males (0.0208 < p = 0.05). Physical discomfort is statistically significant at age 60 - 69 years and over 75 years (p < 0.0001), emotional discomfort is statistically significant at age 55 - 59 years. Both motor discomfort and emotional distress significantly worsen with disease duration (p = 1.966.10'5 < 0.0001). With a 1 % increase in mobility score, there was a 0.58 % increase in emotional well-being. Indicators of emotional distress included feelings of despondency (70.60 %), loneliness (68.63 %), crying (69.29 %), anger (54.90 %), and worry about the future (61.43 %). Motor limitations are related to doing housework (88.90 %) and shopping (74.51 %). Overall 64 % have significant difficulties in stability and maintaining balance with (48.62 %) of respondents having fears of falling. A total of 71.90 % respondents confirmed difficulties with movement indoors and (73.85 %) of respondents outdoors. Conclusion: Emotional discomfort increases with motor load. In the future, it is necessary to monitor the connection of emotional burden with other dimesnsions of quality of life with Parkinson's disease.
