- Abstract
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine marks a distressing escalation in global security tensions. The Russian aggression seeks to alter the territorial status quo in its immediate neighborhood, disregarding international law and weakening the global order. From Japan’s perspective, Moscow’s actions are unacceptable as they seek to challenge the universal values of the international community upon which both Japan’s peace and prosperity depend. Additionally, Russia’s illegal war in Europe puts global attention on geopolitical tensions in other world regions, including Asia. China is actively expanding its regional influence and is embroiled in territorial disputes with Japan and other neighbors. It vigorously asserts its claim over Taiwan. Japan’s Prime Minister Kishida has warned that the move to break international rules and law could find imitators in Asia, stating, ›The Ukraine today may be East Asia tomorrow.‹ This article examines how Japan deals with these geopolitical challenges on the international stage, particularly within multilateral forums like the United Nations, G7, and in the context of its cooperation with NATO. It becomes evident that the current geopolitical tensions limit the options available to the UN and its members. Therefore, Japan is alternatively utilizing smaller, value-based international alliances.
