- Abstract
History as a social discipline has been conditioned by political discourse and economic globalization that is fast becoming a new ideology. The fall of the Berlin Wall led to the disintegration of of the Soviet Union and the polarized East-West world. This was accompanied by a significant change in international relations and political thought at a global level. The theory of history was shaken by these transformations but they had a greater impact upon "critical history", which followed the tradition of Annales and historical materialism. After these early years of turbulence, it has been reformulated with the best 20th century contributions and the epistemological and empirical innovations of the 21st century.
