- Abstract
The article discusses the Rye House Plot, a conspiracy to murder English King Charles II in 1683. It particularly highlights the involvement of politician and republican political theorist Algernon Sidney, examining his trial for High Treason before Lord Chief Justice Sir George Jeffreys. The author considers the involvement of other plotters, including Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury, William Russell, Lord Russell, and Richard Rumbold, called "Hannibal." The possibility of the government inventing the conspiracy is addressed.
