- Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study is to reveal the effect of mycorrhiza under less mineral nutrients on plant growth, yield and product quality in basil cultivation in hydroponic system. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out in the "Soilless Cultivation" glasshouse of Çukurova University, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Horticulture. In the study, Rosie basil cultivar with red color leaf was used. The five mineral fertilization ratios with and without mycorrhiza were used. The treatments were; 1) 100% mineral nutrients, 2)100% mineral nutrients+mycorrhiza, 3) 80% mineral nutrients, 4) 80% mineral nutrients+mycorrhiza, 5) 60% mineral nutrients, 6) 60% mineral nutrients+mycorrhiza, 7) 40% mineral nutrients, 8) 40% mineral nutrients+mycorrhiza, 9) 20% mineral nutrients, 10) 20% mineral nutrients+mycorrhiza. The mycorrhiza bio-fertilizer was a cocktail which consisted of 9 different mycorrhiza species. Mycorrhiza was inoculated during sowing 1000 spores per plant. The experiment was designed with 3 replications and 15 plants in each replication. Results: As a result of the leaf yield data, there was no need to use 100% full mineral fertilizers. Application of 80% mineral fertilizers+mycorrhiza resulted in higher yields than 100% mineral fertilizers. The interesting finding is that when 20% mineral fertilizers used together with mycorrhiza, the basil plants produced a yield equal to 60% mineral fertilizers. The yield enhancing effect of mycorrhiza was observed at all mineral fertilizer ratios. The rates of yield increase compared to their own controls were 2%, 18%, 3%, 36% and 58% in the applications of 100%, 80%, 60%, 40% and 20% mineral fertilizers, respectively. It has been clearly seen that mycorrhiza wass more effective at low mineral fertilizer ratios such as 40% and 20%. There was no statistical difference in leaf pH, EC and total soluble solids (TSS) in the mycorrhiza applications. The mycorrhiza was effective at 40% and 20% mineral fertilizer doses in terms of increasing phenol and vitamin C content. The enhancing effects of mycorrhiza on uptake of macro and micro nutrients were determined. Conclusion: The use of mycorrhiza in hydroponic basil cultivation was effective in reducing mineral fertilizers.
