- Authors
Kitunda, Jeremiah M.
- Abstract
The article presents information on the conditions prevalent in Africa when "Under Kilimanjaro," the posthumous book of Ernest Hemingway, the noted novelist of English language, was written. The book has to be understood in its cultural, linguistic and political backdrop, as well as its geographical setting in East Africa in the 1950s. Hemingway became a member in the Kamba ethnic group as the Akamba people were his favorites. It was an emotionally charged period on the frontier of the Kajiado District, the homeland of the Akamba people, when the book was written. An intersection of many narratives and contrasts was experienced during the writing of the book.
