- Abstract
Gill net is one of the popular fishing methods along the Indian coast. However, there are regional variation in the design, construction and operation of gill nets. The present study deals with the technical specifications, design and operation of Pomfret gill nets of Satpati, Maharashtra. Pomfret gill nets were made up of Polyamide (PA) monofilament of diameter 0.23 to 0.28 mm. White, blue and green translucent coloured twine was commonly used for the main webbing in Satpati. The mesh size ranged from 130 to 140 mm and the hanging coefficient between 0.30 to 0.36. The hung length ranged from 120 to 140 m and the total hung depth was 7 to 8 m. The m. The fleet length of Pomfret gill net ranged from 9600 to 13200 and were operated at a depth of 30 to 50 m, as surface and column set gill nets.
