- Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of fermented rice bran (FRB) as a dietary supplement by measuring the growth performance of broiler chickens. A total of 121 1-day-old broiler chickens were randomly assigned to 5 dietary treatments in cages containing 4 chicks each; each treatment had 6 replicate cages. Over a 35-day period, birds were given (1) a basal diet, formulated to be adequate in energy and nutrients and (2) 4 experimental diets, prepared by adding 1 of the 4 following treatments: 6 mg/kg avilamycin, 10 g/kg Lactobacillus fermented rice bran, 10 g/kg Saccharomyces fermented rice bran and 10 g/kg Bacillus fermented rice bran to the basal diet. The overall BW gains of birds treated with AGP and fermented rice bran were greater (P< 0.01) than those of the basal treatment. No significant differences were found between the basal and supplemented groups in overall feed intake and feed conversion ratio. No significant differences were found in the blood erythrocyte levels. However, leukocyte levels were greater (P< 0.05) for birds fed on the diet containing AGP and lactobacillus fermented rice bran than for birds fed on the basal diet. No significant differences were found for aspartate aminotransferase, alanin aminotransferase, glucose and albumin. Total cholesterol was less (P< 0.05) in the blood of chickens from the AGP and fermented rice bran groups compared to the basal treatment, but the values for the fermented rice bran treatment did not differ from those of the other three treatment groups. No significant differences were found for Lactobacillus, Escherichia coli and Salmonella in the caecal contents of birds. The results show that supplementation of poultry diets with fermented rice bran may be used to improve growth performance of broiler chickens.
